Ways to split rooms without walls

Walls are heavy, slow to build and take up that precious floor space without any other use case for them. So, where do we need walls? Walls are needed to separate the external elements from the interior space. Hence, generally it is recommended to use walls for exterior and interior separation of a space rather than internal room separators. Here are a few alternatives for walls which can be used to split the rooms:

  • Partitions: They are light weight, slimmer in thickness and provide better insulation when filed with insulating materials. Variety of materials like Plywood, Gypsum and Cement Boards can be used for partitions.
  • Glass Partition: Glass is versatile material. When tempered, it is tough and robust. Frosted glass will allow light to pass in the spaces, also by blocking vision for privacy
  • Furniture: A separator unit, like a crockery cabinet between living and dining area, also helps in utilizing the floor space for dual purposes. It is seen as the optimal use of space. It provides storage along with privacy and adds value to the overall decor of the space.
  • Semi-Private Panels: A panel like a jaali partition or louvers break the vision between the rooms, but maintain the air flow at the same time.
  • Foldable Separators: Sometimes you may need a temporary separation for your rooms. In such cases, we can create a sliding folding door or just sliding panels like pocket doors. That way, one can use the space in multiple ways. Multi-functions rooms work better as space saving options.
  • Visual screening: A tall screening which comes upto your eyesight, like tall indoor plants in decorative planters, add life to the space along with privacy and zoning of the space. It is also one of the quick and cost effective solution!

So next time you are thinking of separating your indoor spaces, do keep in mind these solutions. You can go with the one that suits your requirements and your budget the best!
