Maximize natural light in your space

Natural light is fresh, ample and also free! It keeps your mind and eyes young. The sun is an unlimited source of natural light. It is sustainable, abundant and almost free in certain scenarios if we use it correctly. It is upto us how we use it to our advantage.

Direct exposure to sun rays may cause harm to our skin. Hence, before we proceed to use the natural light in our spaces, we need to do certain preventive treatments to our space like UV rays protection films on windows, reflective paints on exterior walls, directional screening and glazing, etc.

Some of these points may not apply to already built structures, but here are few tips which will help you maximize the natural light in your space:

  • Size of openings: The openings like windows and doorways are the primary source of natural light in any space. Increasing the width and height of such openings helps a lot in bringing in the natural light. One needs to take care of safety precautions like grills and compliances before re-modelling their space.
  • Punctures & Projections: While punctures in the structure like windows bring in the light, projections like weather sheds & chajjas protect us from the harsh radiations, heat and rain water. While designing a new structure, it is very crucial to think of the location and dimensions of these punctures and projections. Using a compass will generally give an idea of the movement of The Sun.
  • Furniture Layout: Apartments that have space constraints often throw challenges at us regards to the layout and zoning of spaces. At such times, it is very crucial for us to avoid blocking the windows with furniture and other stuff, thus letting in great amount of natural light.
  • Window Treatments: One often tends to close off the windows using intricate grills or insect screens. Sometimes window grills also have planters kept inside of them. Even though such things are necessary, they create shadows which in return reduce the natural light. One should be careful while doing these type of treatments.
  • Skylights: The core of any building, especially that of a bungalow, faces a big challenge to bring in natural light. At such times, it is better to incorporate a skylight above the volume of the space. Skylights bring in concentrated source of light, which spreads throughout the open volumes. It works like magic!
  • Vents and Fixed glazing: Ventilators and fixed glazing above the lintel level help in bringing in the natural light from the top of the space. Remember, any light coming from top will spread evenly, because there are few obstructions in the height of any room. They help in gazing out towards a good view if your structure has one!

Natural light should be the first priority of any indoor space. It has many health benefits.

Don't worry, if your space does not permit you for natural light maximization, you can try to achieve a similar comfort by using the correct artificial light fixtures. You can read our blog on Artificial Lighting, where we have covered terms like CRI, LUX Level, Color Temperature and other technical details which will help you choose the right light fixture for your space.
