Tips for designing dining area

Food is our fuel. Its important that the space we enjoy our food is convenient and user friendly. Here are a few tips to consider before allocating a budget and starting the work for your dining area:

  • The Dining Table: The size of the table primarily depends upon the number of users. Some dining tables have curved legs or indented legs, which need more space because the chairs need more space between the legs to go in when not in use. The material used for top also determines the size and thicknesses of the frame of the table. Once the table size is finalized, we need to keep space behind chairs for movement, serving and overall circulation. If your developer has already provided a space for dining, all of these points can be reverse applied to select or manufacture a table that will suit your space and requirements. Cushioning for the chairs is a personal choice, but if food spills on the fabric, it becomes tough to clean. Same for carpets!
  • Storage: We need some storage around the dining table to store crockery items, cutlery and other accessories. Side food items like pickles, dips and chutneys also need some space which comes in handy, so that the users don't disturb the kitchen for these small requirements.
  • Privacy: The privacy of the users having food is quite important, especially if the dining area is visible from common areas like living room and entrance lobby. Sometimes the dining area also has view of the common washroom  or bedroom doors, in which case both the users feel uncomfortable. In such cases, use of privacy panels, screenings and partition comes to the rescue, and maintains the decor of the space.
  • Lighting: Lighting plays a crucial role in any interior space, but especially at dining area. We don't want to add salt instead of sugar because of poor lighting, right?! While the ambient light will illuminate the overall area, we may need a task light like a pendant lamp above the dining table. This also provides a good aesthetic to the overall space.
  • Air Circulation: Maintaining a good air flow ensures the comfort of the user, and also takes away the lingering smell of food from the space, keeping it fresh. A ceiling fan will help keep the air moving, but may make your food cold for eating. Mechanical ventilation like AC carries the smell of food as well. Natural air flow needs to be maintained by providing the dining area near windows, or vice versa.
  • Electrical Sockets: A few electrical sockets to plug small equipment like toaster, kettle, etc. needs to be provided.
  • Dual Purpose: We all love to throw good parties and entertain our friends and family often. In such scenarios, the dining table can also be used as a serving platform or a buffet counter. So it is important to keep one side of the table open so that it serves such type of a dual purpose. Another use case for the dining table is using it as a temporary work desk when you don't want to disturb others.
